on November 30, 2009 at 5:54 amDo you like coffee? I love coffee, and so does Eydis! I’m personally a fan of McDonald’s coffee, though I’d definately get a cup of Starbucks from time to time. Eydis on the other hand, because she’s a comic character has to get her coffee fixes from Tarfux! One thing though that I’ve never understood about coffees is the way they name them and the sizes of which you can buy them in. What, for instance, is the deal with “a tall” being the name of the small ass cup at Starbucks? Irritates the hell out of me every time I see it. Shouldn’t it be called “a short” or “a not worth your time and/or money for what you get?” I don’t feel that the word tall makes me feel any better about my slighted purchase! Also, completely irrelevant to my rant but never go to a coffee shop and ask for “a regular ass coffee!” Apparently, this is rude and offensive to a barista and you wont get the same plesant response Eydis got in the real world. Baristas are a crazy folk sometime…. Which, by the way leads to a small behind the scenes point about this page. The barista at this specific Tarfux is actually Mr. Ali Showkati, the artist and writer of Spaghetti Strap Western. For a few years Ali worked for Starbucks and loved his job so much that I just had to throw him in this page as the barista that would serve Eydis! He’s served everyone else…so why not start serving our comic book characters too!

Barista: Hi! Welcome to Tarfux, what can I get started for ya?
Eydis: What do you call a regular black coffee here?

Barista: Merde Noir.

Eydis: ...
[Panel 6]
Barista stares at Eydis.
[Panel 7]
Eydis stares back, weirded out.
[Panel 8]
Barista: Would you like one?
[Panel 9]
Eydis: Sure... Give me a shitty coffee why don't cha.

Barista: Comin' right up!
[Panel 11]
Eydis thinks to herself, "Shit Coffee? No wonder I don't get people..."

Oh god Coffee guy creeps me the hell out… seriosuly (panel 6 &
LOL, it was funny.. when i was drawing this i hadn’t intended for the barista to be THAT creepy but at some point in the middle of the night while working on this I started to notice it and worked Eydis’ expression a bit to reflex the unintended creepiness of the situation. I wasn’t sure if it was 2am talk delirium to me or if that was actually funny but I’m glad you saw the underlying humor in this strip. :]

Have you ever had an awkward moment with a customer service representative? I have plenty of times… and most of them are at coffee shops actually. lol

Well thank you sir! I’m really trying to develop a world inside and outside of the comic that the characters are actually involved in. Since you cant really say a fictional characters is going to a real place, why not make a “real” fictional play for them to go to instead. :] …I hope that made sense. haha.
I found the squid thing in the Tarfux logo a little disquieting ._. I love the little details like that you add in your comics ^_^ You are awesome.

See this is why you get your coffee at a 7-eleven or Unimart, don’t need to take any crap from anyone and you get it the way you want it, all for half the cost.
Honestly, I just get my coffee at McDonalds now. :] I hate the snobosphere around coffee AND it’s cheaper as you mentioned. :]
